Markers of Autism Risk in Babies-Learning Early Signs

 
 

Participation

Who is eligible to participate in the study?

Women who are currently pregnant, or who have a likelihood of becoming pregnant in the near future, and who have previously given birth to a child with autism are invited to participate. In addition, their child with autism is also able to participate.

In addition to being pregnant, the mother must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be the biological mother of a child with autism
  • Must live within a 2 hour drive of UCDavis
What will you be asked to do?
  • Give us permission to access and assess medical records concerning your child and pregnancy.
  • Answer a series of questionnaires and surveys
  • Complete a symptom diary once a week during pregnancy and monthly or bi-monthly during the first year of your child's life
  • Provide urine and blood samples during pregnancy, placenta and cord blood samples following delivery, and breastmilk samples during the postpartum period (if you are nursing your child)
  • Allow infants to undergo periodic behavioral testing
  • Allow periodic collection of infant saliva and blood samples
  • Allow collection of dust samples from your home
  • For your convenience, study personnel will come to your home to collect this information.

 

 

How will your family benefit from participation?

In addition to helping us find markers that predict the risk for autism spectrum disorders and helping us discover preventable causes, you will receive compensation for your time. Also, there is no travel time associated with participation in the study. . . we travel to you!

What are the costs of participation?

There is no charge for your participation in this study. Neither you nor your insurance carrier will be charged for your participation in this research. The sponsors of this research will pay for all costs associated with this research.
